In the ongoing battle against overtourism, Amsterdam is on the verge of setting a new European and possibly global record for the highest ‘tourist tax.’ According to a budget released by the city government, this increase is aimed at ensuring that visitors make a more substantial contribution to the city’s well-being.
The daily fee imposed on cruise ship day visitors will rise from 8 to 11 euros, equivalent to $8.50 to $11.60, while the nightly fee integrated into hotel room rates will increase to 12.5% of the room rate.
In recent years, Amsterdam has implemented various measures to address overtourism, including dissuading unwanted visitors and controlling cruise ship arrivals. Additionally, efforts have been made to discourage those who visit the city in pursuit of specific activities such as sex and drug-related tourism.
